The proposed wind power plant will employ 365 turbines of 850KW capacity each,and will generate clean and affordable energy, reducing 16 million tons of CO2 emissions.

A 428-km transmission line will be constructed to connect the project site to the national grid. To this end, the Government of Kenya has secured financing from the Spanish Government.

Lake Turkana Wind Power, a special purpose vehicle, will implement the project.

The group of investors for the project includes Kemperman Paardekooper & Partners Africa, Aldwych International, the Investment Fund for Developing Countries of Denmark, Norfund, and Vestas Wind Systems.

AfDB, as the Mandated Lead Arranger for the project, will raise about €127m in senior debt and a further €58m of subordinated debt.

The wind power project is expected to create jobs for the local people during the construction phase and will also upgrade the rural road network.

In addition, AFDB is financing the Thika Thermal Project and Menengai Geothermal Power.
