The unit went offline on June 24, 2009 for unplanned reasons. Unit 7 at the power plant has 480 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity.

The plant is situated in Redondo in Los Angeles County about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The total generation capacity of the plant is 1,310MW.

The Redondo Beach facility comprises four units, which includes Unit 5 that entered service in 1954 with 175MW of capacity, Unit 6 that entered service in 1957 with 175MW of capacity, Unit 7 and Unit 8 that commenced rolling in 1967 with 480MW of capacity each.

One MW power supplied by the plant can serve around 700 homes in California.
