Switzerland-based power and automation technology group ABB has won a contract from Italy’s power company Enel, to supply automation and control system, Symphony Plus, for its 590MW Grazia Deledda Sulcis coal-fired plant in Sardinia.

The 590MW coal-fired plant is set up near the town of Portoscuso on the southwestern coast of Sardinia and has two power generating units.

Enel is replacing the existing control system with ABB’s Symphony Plus to increase the efficiency of the two units at the Grazia Deledda Sulcis plant and also to reduce the environmental impact.

ABB’s Symphony Plus solution includes the newly introduced controller, burner management and flue gas desulfurization systems, instrumentation, a new control room and operator stations equipped with an intuitive and easy-to-use human machine interface.

ABB Power Generation business head Massimo Danieli said the Symphony Plus solution will improve efficiency and environmental performance of the plant and integrate many plant production and information systems into one platform.

"It is scalable and enables integration of the plant’s electrical, business and maintenance systems as requirements evolve over time," Danieli added.

Italy produces almost 52% of its electricity needs by using gas and in order to reduce the country’s dependency on gas imports from Russia and Algeria, the country is expected to see a rise in coal-fired plants.
