For the past several years, various state and privately owned Indian companies have been seeking coal assets in various countries in order to meet the demand. These include Indian trading companies, steel makers and even state coal producer, Coal of India.

Kiepersol, located in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga is a mothballed underground mine, which produces mid-low volatile content thermal coal that is mainly used for power generation. The mine was originally developed by Duiker who sold its mines to Xstrata.

Jindal Power, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSPL, is constructing a 1,000MW thermal power plant at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh with INR45 billion investment. The parent company owns open cast coal mines at Raigarh, which has a reserves of around 100 million tonne. The mines meet the coal requirements of its existing captive power plant in Raigarh.
