Höegh Evi has secured a 10-year charter agreement with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) towards the deployment of the Hoegh Gandria as a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Egypt.

The unit is set to operate at the Port of Sumed in Q4 2026. It will provide up to 1,000 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/day) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification capacity, thereby bolstering Egypt’s energy infrastructure.

The conversion process for the Hoegh Gandria from an LNG carrier to an FSRU will commence immediately, aligning with Höegh Evi’s strategy to leverage the flexibility and efficiency of marine infrastructure.

Acquired in February 2023, the vessel will undergo transformation into a high-capacity FSRU to support long-term deployment goals.

Höegh Evi president and CEO Erik Nyheim said: “Höegh Evi is proud of our longstanding role as a trusted energy infrastructure partner to Egypt and we are excited to begin the conversion of Hoegh Gandria to a floating import terminal, highlighting the unique flexibility of marine infrastructure.

“We look forward to building on the successful long relationship we have with EGAS and supporting the growth of Egypt’s diversified energy system.”

Currently, FSRU Hoegh Galleon is operating in Egypt under an interim charter that began in July 2024. It will continue operations there for up to another year before relocating to Port Kembla, Australia, in 2027.

Seatrium has been awarded a contract from Höegh Evi for converting the Hoegh Gandria into an FSRU. This project includes installing a regasification skid and integrating essential systems like cargo handling and automation.

Engineering work is scheduled to begin in May 2025 with an estimated duration of 18 months.

Seatrium repairs and upgrades executive vice president Alvin Gan said: “We are truly honoured to be selected by Hoegh Evi for this milestone FSRU conversion project, further cementing Seatrium’s position as a pioneer and market leader in the highly specialised FSRU conversion business.

“Our longstanding partnership with Hoegh, built on successfully delivering major repairs and retrofits for their LNG carrier fleet over the years, is a testament to the trust and confidence they have in our capabilities.”
