The US Department of Agriculture's Rural Development unit has sanctioned around $12.3m in funding for the upgradation of wastewater treatment plant in Newmarket.

Of the total funding, around $10.34m will be provided in loan and the remaining $1.96m will be provided in grant.

The funding will be employed to achieve nutrient removal and upgrade the main sewer pump station at the wastewater treatment plant as it is unable to reduce the nitrogen levels.

Commenting on the initiative, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter was quoted by Fosters as saying that lowering the pollution in the region by modernizing wastewater treatment plants is a key step.

In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency will offer around $1.8m for the wastewater treatment project.
