The proposed projects, which will be implemented based on land availability and techno economic viability of the project, will be spread across the states of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Telangana and Rajasthan.
The move is in line with the government’s initiative National Solar Mission, which is aimed at deploying 20,000MW of grid connected solar power by 2022, besides reducing the cost of solar power generation in the country.
The initiative is aimed at promoting ecologically sustainable growth while addressing India’s energy security challenges.
As part of its plans, NLC opened a 10MW solar power plant at Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, marking its entry into the renewable power generation business.
The Neyveli solar project comprises 48,000 solar photovoltaic modules, each with power generating capacity of 240 Watt.
The Tamil Nadu generation and distribution corporation (Tangedco) will purchase the power generated at the solar project.
The power from the plant will be transmitted to the switching station of the Neyveli thermal power station through a 33KV power station and then fed to Tangedco.
Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited will operate and maintain the project for a period of three years after the performance guarantee period of one year.
NLC identified a land in the Neyveli township for a 130MW solar power project, with plans to invest Rs1.67bn ($25.2m) in a 25MW solar plant in Barsingsar, Rajasthan.
