The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released details of greenhouse gas emissions for 2005, revealling that overall emissions increased by less than one percent from the previous year.

Total emissions of the six main greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulphur hexafluoride – in 2005 came in at more than 7.25 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The report indicates that while overall emissions have grown by 16% from 1990 to 2005, the country’s economy has grown by 55% over the same period. The inventory also calculates carbon dioxide emissions that are removed from the atmosphere by sinks.

The report is available at: www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/usinventoryreport.html
