MTU has introduced a new diesel engine in a single model for 50 and 60 Hz gensets, the 3.01 MW rated 20V 4000. This is a 1500/1800 rpm development of the 16V with four more cylinders, a longer stroke and 35 per cent more power.

MTU offers the 20V 4000 in an emissions-optimised version, in which the engine complies with all current valid emission regulations, including TA Luft and US EPA Tier 1, with a fuel consumption of 203 g/kWh. The 50 Hz machine can also be optimised for low fuel consumption, achieving 192g/kWh.

The 20V 4000, says MTU, is relatively light, and “easily accommodated in large building complexes” where emergency gensets are often installed in the upper floors. This is particularly advantageous where 3MW is demanded, since up to now this could only be provided by heavy, medium speed gensets.

MTU says the 20V 4000 is the only engine in its performance class that has the efficient and flexible ‘common rail’ injection system. All injection parameters that influence combustion can be specified. This includes the timing and duration of injection and injection pressure across the performance range. A further technical highlight is the charging system, says MTU, which consists of two 48 000 rpm ZR 205 turbos able to inject up to 12 000 m3/h.
