Ho Chi Minh city has approved to build two wastewater treatment plants of worth VND13.6 billion in the second phase of the Tham Luong–Ben Cat-Nuoc Len canal and drainage project to control pollution. The work on these plants will start in the second quarter of 2009 and will be completed in two years. One plant will treat wastewater from Western Sai Gon, near Tan Binh Industrial Park, and the other from Tham Luong of Ben Cat area, including An Phu Dong ward in district 12.
The second phase also include building two ditches along the Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len canal to drain runoff water, prevent flooding, and treat wastewater from the Tham Luong-Ben Cat canal. The work on four of the 11 bidding packages, corresponding to around 40% of the project, is in progress.
The project managers report to the Agriculture and Rural Development Department and people’s committees of District 12, Go Vap and Tan Binh Districts. They are immediately clearing the work site, expecting to start work on 11 packages by the third quarter.
The objective of the project is cleaning the polluted water from the Tham Luong – Ben Cat valley before it enters the Saigon River to safeguard the environment and reassure investors. This will improve the quality of water in the Saigon River.
The project authorities have paid compensation to people living on the sites. They have mobilized funds for the second phase.
