GE and American Water have established a new digital initiative to help address urgent water challenges.

The initiative will find and explore advances in industrial Internet of Things and harness power of software and big data to enhance national water infrastructure.

The initiative will use GE’s Predix, a cloud platform built exclusively for industry that strengthens industrial internet.

The companies will collaborate in the development of the next generation of software and data analytics solutions to help the industry lower the environmental impacts and operating costs related with water production, treatment, transportation and delivery.

GE Power water and distributed power president and CEO Heiner Markhoff said "We are excited to launch our new digital collaboration with American Water by combining our collective expertise in software, water technologies and utility management to help the United States build a more sustainable and secure water future."

American Water offers regulated and market-based drinking water, wastewater and other associaated services to nearly 15 million people in 47 states and Ontario, Canada.
