Iberdrola Ingenieria has commenced construction of the Votkinskaya substation, the first major project in the electricity transmission grid operation in Russia.

The development follows a contract worth €32m by RusHydro.

To be located inside a building, the new Votkinskaya substation will be equipped with latest technology in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) which enables the facilities to take up 90% less space than conventional models, while enabling them to better adapt to the environment.

The facility has been designed to receive energy generated by the hydropower plant of the same name, which has a capacity of 1,020MW. It will supply power to residents in the regions of Perm, Udmurt, Kirov, Bashkir and Sverdlovsk.

For the Votkinskaya project, the Iberdrola subsidiary will manage the engineering, storage, construction and commissioning of the infrastructure. Iberdrola Ingeniería will erect the new infrastructure on the same site as the current substation.
