Monitoring Microbial Activity in Petroleum Systems

Microbial activity in petroleum systems causes serious operational problems, including biofouling, reservoir souring and corrosion, resulting in economic loss to the industry world wide. Molecular techniques for microbial monitoring provide valuable information about microbial identity, numbers, and abundance in a given system. They however often lack in providing information about the metabolic activity and the functional interaction of the microorganisms with their environment.
