India-based Welspun Energy has commenced operations at a 50MW solar power plant in the Jodhpur district of the Rajasthan state.

The facility, located near Phalodi, was developed in three phases and is expected to generate about 90MWh of clean electricity, enough to power 25 million households.

Welspun Energy co-founder and managing director Vineet Mittal was quoted by Live Mint as saying that it was the company’s objective to provide clean renewable energy for the state and termed the new 50MW solar project to be a mile stone.

"Completion of this project ahead of schedule and at a lower budgeted cost demonstrates Welspun Energy’s expertise in solar project development," added Mittal.

Welspun developed the project under a competitive bid secured as part of the Phase-1 of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

The company is currently involved in the development of 750MW solar power in the country as well as 1GW wind power assets.
