The grant funds are being made available to the DOE through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
If successful, the project will consist of three key initiatives:
Solar panels may be installed on some City or Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Authority properties.
An array of solar cells will be placed in northern Vanderburgh County, which would supply 1 MW of energy directly to the electric grid and the new downtown arena.
A photovoltaic applied research test lab, visitor center and meteorological station will be constructed at the same location.
Only four projects are expected to be funded nationwide.
The DOE anticipates notifying recipients in January 2010 with funding being distributed by February 2010.
This project also requires approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and City Council.
