Chinese officials have confirmed that a breach in a 60m high, 2.5km wide natural dam on the Tsangpo river probably caused flooding in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India.
Images taken by a Canadian remote sensing satellite have shown that the flash floods hit Arunachal Pradesh, which borders China, following the breaching of a dam on the river.
The Tsangpo, which originates in Tibet, flows into India and is called Siang in Arunachal Pradesh before it becomes the Brahmaputra. The natural dam was created by a landslide which blocked the Tsangpo river. Officials in the Arunachal Pradesh state government say that floods of this magnitude have never been recorded before.
