Russian Aluminium (RusAl) has allocated US$50M towards preparatory work for the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power plant in Tajikistan.

Construction of the plant on the Vakhsh river began in March 1981, but was halted in 1993 due to a lack of funding and the unstable political situation in Tajikistan.

The plant has a design capacity of 3600MW that would generate around 13.1BkWh of electricity each year. RusAl plans to use the electricity generated by the project at an aluminium plant that it plans to build in Tajikistan.
