India’s Patel Engineering is to venture into hydro power generation by bidding for independent power projects (IPP), according to local reports.

The company is planning to bid for projects in the range of 100-500MW on a build operate and transfer basis, in India’s north and northeastern regions.

Petel Engineering has been a contractor for a number of hydroelectric projects, and is now taking the move towards runing plants itself. The company will reportedly start bidding from 2007.

It has recently won a US$993,500 order for the 520MW Parbati hydro project stage III from the National Hydroelectric Power Corportation in a consortium with Larsen & Toubro.
