ON Semiconductor Corporation (ON Semiconductor) has received an order from Hipro Electronics Taiwan Co., Ltd. (Hipro Electronics), for GreenPoint ATX design. The design offers 88% power efficiency (80 PLUS Silver) across all load points, reducing power losses by about 68%. ON Semiconductor design addresses all functional blocks of the ATX power supply, including power factor correction, switch-mode power supply control and regulation, post regulation, and standby power.

ON Semiconductor ATX 88% efficiency solution for Hipro uses zero voltage switching (ZVS) architecture and addresses all functional blocks of the ATX power supply, including power factor correction, switch-mode power supply control and regulation, post regulation and standby power.

The computing industry has growing demands for power efficiency, said S. C. Loh, technical director of Hipro Electronics Hong Kong. ON Semiconductor’s new ATX 88 percent efficiency solution meets our requirements to develop highly efficient power supplies across all load points in our desktop PCs. ATX power supplies on the market today typically operate at 70 percent power efficiency, hence ON Semiconductor’s ATX solution is beyond market benchmark, which means our PC customers get higher power efficiency and savings.”

The Hipro order reflects the confidence of our longstanding customer in achieving our goal— to be the industry benchmark for power efficiency,” said Darrell Lim, ON Semiconductor regional vice president of sales for Greater China. “ON Semiconductor is committed to delivering innovative, turnkey power efficient solutions to address the global need for power efficiency in both active and standby modes. We worked closely with worldwide regulatory organizations and our customers to develop the ATX 80 PLUS Silver efficiency power solution, and have customized it to Hipro’s specifications to deliver 88 percent power efficiency.”

ON Semiconductor has launched open GreenPoint ATX reference design certified to meet 80 PLUS performance requirements for computing applications in 2005. The company launched another ATX reference design that exceeds new ENERGY STAR efficiency standards for desktop computers in 2007. Its latest ATX 80 PLUS Silver efficiency reference design further demonstrates ON Semiconductor’s commitment to energy conservation and customers with highly efficient and cost-effective power solutions.

The company’s reference design addresses all functional blocks of the ATX power supply, including power factor correction, switch-mode power supply control and regulation, post regulation, and standby power. The design utilizes several of ON Semiconductor’s newest power management devices and draws from its discrete component portfolio to achieve superior efficiency performance.

ON Semiconductor has a complete documentation package for the ATX reference design, including description, schematics, bill-of-materials, Gerber files, and evaluation guidelines.
