The Sunrise River Energy station is expected to open by 2013 pending regulatory approvals, according to LS Power.

Opposed throughout Minnesota, the Big Stone II project, located over the border in South Dakota, includes improving the existing Big Stone I plant to reduce particulate emissions such as mercury and sulfur. Big Stone II would emit approximately 4 million tons of CO2 annually. Both plants then would release fewer particulates as compared to current emissions from Big Stone I. The cost of the Big Stone II project is estimated at around $1.6 billion.
