Iberdrola Renewables, a provider of wind power, has entered into a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Salt River Project, a public power utility, to sell 20MW of solar PV energy generated from Copper Crossing Solar Ranch in Pinal County.

The solar facility, which is expected to be online by June 2011, will use solar PV panels to produce an amount of energy equal to that needed to serve about 3,100 SRP customers’ homes.

In addition to signing the PPA, SRP will contribute to the Copper Crossing solar project by leasing a portion of the property SRP has purchased between Quail Run Lane and Attaway Road, and between Judd Road and Bella Vista Road, for the development of the solar facility.

The new solar plant represents Iberdrola Renewables third renewable power project with SRP, the first being the Dry Lake Wind Farm Phase 1 that completed in October 2009 with the Phase 2 scheduled for completion by early 2011.

Iberdrola Renewables executive vice president Martin Mugica said that Iberdrola Renewables is delighted to partner for the third time with SRP, this time for one of the largest utility-scale projects in Arizona.

“SRP has been a leader in bringing clean, renewable energy to Arizona, by purchasing the output of the first commercial-scale wind farms in the state and now with this, one of Iberdrola Renewables’ first solar projects,” Mugica said.
