A comment period including a public meeting was held in past July 2009. The plan also includes restricting access to ground water through local ordinances, and the installation of vapor extraction systems under some homes to address the possibility of harmful gases rising up through the ground into homes.
There will be no cost to residents for either the water connections or installation of the soil-vapor systems. EPA’s Superfund program will fund 90% of the cleanup, with a 10% contribution from Ohio EPA.
With the plan now final, EPA is working on engineering designs for the water connections and soil-vapor systems over the winter. Residents targeted for these systems will be contacted in late 2009 and early 2010.
