Envision Solar International, a solar infrastructure designer and developer, has secured a contract from General Motors (GM), to install its CleanCharge solar powered electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations integrated into EnvisionTrak tracking Solar Trees at a number of locations.

Envision Solar’s Solar Tree with EnvisionTrak is a parking lot solar array that incorporates dual access tracking that enables the canopy to follow the sun throughout the day, proving to be 20 to 25% more productive than conventional fixed solar arrays.

The installation of the CleanCharge EV charging system will serve to demonstrate GM’s commitment to the proliferation of EV charging infrastructure prior to the launch of its Chevy Volt extended-range electric car in November 2010 in California, Michigan, Washington D.C., Texas and New York.

Envision Solar CEO Bob Noble said that the company is pleased to have been selected by General Motors for these strategic installations that will enable Chevy Volts to leverage clean solar power to recharge their batteries without relying on carbon fuel generated electricity.

“We applaud GM’s commitment to clean energy as well as green job creation through this initiative,” Noble said.
