Swiss-Swedish engineering group ABB is installing protection and control systems to modernise the 10 GW Guri power plant in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, the second largest hydro plant in the world.

The upgrades will strengthen the national power grid, part of a $26 million contract from ELELCA (Electrificacion del Caroni).

ABB systems will be installed in several phases, beginning in 2007 and along with the retrofit, ABB will provide installation and training. Detailed commercial terms have not been disclosed.

The Guri dam is 1,300 m long and 162 m high, it supplies 60% of Venezuela’s electricity demand.
