Offshore productivity increase

Subsea control equipment

Bender’s proven expertise is particularly valued in the offshore sector where the integrity of unearthed electrical distribution systems, umbilicals, cables and connectors, is an important factor when maintaining the operability of static platforms, FPSOs and subsea control equipment.

Its systems operate with higher voltage distribution – from as high as 7.2Kv down to zero – and are widely used for insulation monitoring of the high voltage power supply to ROVs.

Platform and FPSO requirements

On fixed platforms and FPSOs, Line Insulation Monitoring (LIMs) in combination with EDS insulation fault location ensures the reliability and safety of electrical supply and control systems for drilling equipment, pumping stations, well head control, and other platform plant and processes.

Bender units intelligently adapt themselves to the systems they are monitoring to accurately report the status of power systems. On surface installations that includes taking account of the complex DC current leakage which makes accurate checks more difficult, and occurs due to the TVs, monitors, laptops and electronic devices now routinely found on platform electrical systems.

Monitoring ungrounded systems

A frequently used measuring principle for earth faults and insulation degradation is the superimposition of a DC measuring voltage between the system and ground. This is the standard measuring principle for pure AC ungrounded systems, both single and three-phase.

Bender’s Adaptive Measuring Principle (AMP) overcomes the limitations of DC measuring signals by superimposing a clocked, pulsed measuring voltage onto the system. The signal is microprocessor controlled to automatically adapt itself to prevailing system conditions, such as high leakage capacitances, and is designed for modern power distribution systems that include pure DC systems, systems with a mix of AC and DC (including rectifiers), and systems with variable frequency drives.

Measuring insulation resistance

Bender UK has developed products designed to monitor the insulation resistance of de-energised systems or loads such as emergency shutdown systems, fire extinguisher pumps, lifeboat winches and standby generators.

Critical fire and gas detection, platform shutdown and process control systems – typically DC 24 V – are particularly sensitive areas and the rapid location of insulation faults with EDS systems is a vital aid to safety and avoiding production downtime.

Most recently Bender UK has dedicated resources to enhancing the adaptability of its sophisticated monitoring and fault location, taking advantage of the opportunity to extend its partnerships with OEMs with the aim of customising Bender’s proven products for the new generation subsea factories, extraction and processing operations in oil and gas fields now being prepared for production.

Bender Ground Fault Protection – Ships and Offshore Platforms

Ungrounded systems onboard ships and offshore platforms are continuously monitored by a Bender ground detector. Connected between the active conductors and ground (the hull), the detector superimposes a small measuring voltage onto the system. If a ground fault occurs, the measuring circuit is closed and a small measauring current will flow. The measuring current is proportional to the insulation resistance (the magnitude of the ground fault), and is evaluated by the detector.
